Launch Apple Mail for the first time
If you have never used Apple Mail before, it starts up and asks for basic setup information. If you have previously used Apple Mail, then you can skip to the “Enter your e-mail settings” heading.
- Launch Apple Mail. The setup assistant appears.
- Enter your full name in the “Your name” field. Whatever you enter here is added automatically to each outgoing e-mail and newsgroup message sent from Mail. ITS recommends that you enter at least your first initial and last name in this field.
- Enter your RIT e-mail address in the “Email Address” field. An address in the form of “abc1234@rit.edu” is typical.
- Enter the password for your RIT account in the “Password” field.
- Select “Exchange” from the “Account Type” pop-up menu.
- Enter a description to identify your account in Mail in the “Account Description” field. If you setup multiple accounts in Apple Mail, this description will help you tell them apart.
- Type “mymail.rit.edu” for “Incoming Mail Server.”
- Type your RIT computer account username in the “User Name” field. Your username should have a combination of three initials and four numbers (“abc1234”) or three initials followed by a department code (“abcdef”). Make sure your username is in lowercase letters. This is not an e-mail address — do not enter an @ symbol or anything that would follow that symbol if you were typing an e-mail address.
- Enter the password for your RIT account in the “Password” field.
- Type “mymail.rit.edu” for “Outlook Web Access Server.”
- Hit “Continue.”
- Enter a description to identify the RIT Outgoing mail server in the “Description” field. If you have multiple mail services, this can be useful for differentiating which one you are sending from.
- Enter “mymail.rit.edu” next to “Outgoing Mail Server.”
- Check “Use only this server.” This will mean that your RIT account can only send mail through the RIT servers. Other accounts you may set up can still use any mail server for outgoing mail.
- Check “Use Authentication”
- Enter your RIT computer account username (ie, abc1234) in the “User Name” field
- Enter your RIT computer account password in the “Password” field
- Hit Continue
- Review the Account Summary to be sure your settings are correct.
- Check “Take Account Online”
- Hit Create
- Hit “Don’t Show” if you see a message entitled “Would you like to see what’s new?”
You are done with the first launch of Apple Mail. If you wish, you may continue toset up Mail’s LDAP settings and verify your settings against some Reference screenshots.
Enter your e-mail settings
Your basic e-mail settings may have been entered in the Setup Assistant when you first started up your computer, or after you installed Mac OS X on your computer. If the setup Assistant does not appear when you launch Apple Mail, perform the following steps to add your RIT Exchange account:
- Select “Preferences” from the Mail menu. The “Preferences” window appears. The “Preferences” window has a number of toolbar buttons, at the top of the window, for different settings.
- Click on the “Accounts” toolbar icon in the “Preferences” window.
- If you wish to add your RIT Exchange account, click the “+” button at the bottom left of the window.
- Follow the steps described above in the “Launch Apple Mail for the first time”section.
LDAP settings
If you configure RIT’s LDAP server in Apple Mail, you will be able to search user and group email addresses. Follow these steps to configure LDAP:
- Select “Preferences” from the Mail menu and navigate to the “Composing” tab in the Preferences window that appears.
- Click on the “Configure LDAP…” button. A sheet containing a list of Mail’s current LDAP servers appears; it will probably be empty at this point.
- Click on the “+” button to add a new LDAP server. The “Server Info” dialog box appears.
- Enter “RIT Directory” in the “Name” field.
- Add “ldap.rit.edu” into the “Server” field.
- Make sure that the Port is set to 389 and the “Use SSL” checkbox is left disabled.
- Type “ou=people,dc=rit,dc=edu” in the “Search Base” field.
- Set the “Authentication” to “Simple.”
- In the “User name” field, enter the following text (replace <username> with your RIT username): uid=<username>,ou=people,dc=rit,dc=edu
- In the “Password” field, enter your RIT computer account password.
- Click on the “Save” button to return to the list of LDAP directories. The “RIT Directory” should be listed.
- Click the “Done” button to return to the “Composing” preferences. This completes the LDAP set up.
- NOTE: Due to an incompatibility between Apple’s secure LDAP implementation and RIT’s firewall and LDAP servers, directory lookups will fail from off campus unless you are connected to the network via VPN. You will still be able to send and receive email, as LDAP lookups are the only component affected by this issue.
